The World Chasing the Cup by Bibek Sengupta (2018)

The World Chasing the Cup by Bibek Sengupta
(ISBN-13: 978-9386206824, Times Group Books, 2018)

World Cup Football means new and exceptional talents, out-of-the-box strategies, jaw-dropping excitement, magnificent goals, and a thrilling atmosphere. But that’s not all! There are many hidden anecdotes and plentiful incredible facts associated with it. The most prestigious football tournament on earth has been marred by the World Wars, theft of the trophy, political interference, scams, ‘Hand of God’, infamous head-butts, spitting and biting, failed dope test, and an own goal that even led to a tragic murder. Clinching the title brought festivity in one nation while the other mourned in defeat. The World Chasing the Cup not only brings alive the most memorable and humorous moments from its 88 years of colorful history, but also remembers and pays homage to yesteryear star players, who mesmerized the world. The bonus in this book is the section on the origin and evolution of this beautiful game. Overall, the book is an out-and-out visual delight, a time-machine ride with hilarious cartoons, caricatures and comic strips, which football fans of all ages will enjoy equally.

A Fitting Tribute to the Legendary Cartoonist of India

He was undoubtedly the best cartoonist India has ever produced. Ahead of his birth centenary, here comes another grand collection of R.K. Laxman's best editorial cartoons from TOI's archive; curated and narrated by another great Ajit Ninan, the senior editorial cartoonist of The TImes of India today. Cover of the book was illustrated by Bibek Sengupta.

A set of 2 volumes in this collector's edition come in a beautifully designed slipcase released from Times Group Books in February, 2020. Available at all the online portals and leading bookstores across India.

A cartoon is perhaps the most biting and most effective form of comment, and it takes a genius to draw a great one. RK Laxman’s Common Man was just such an uncommon accomplishment. For over fifty years, he laid bare the corruption, hypocrisy and absurdity of political and everyday life through The Common Man, a daily cartoon that appeared in The Times of India. The mild, stooped Common Man was the conduit for Laxman’s piercing vision, hailed as nearly unparalleled. In this book, the second volume in the An uncommon man series, Ajit Ninan, the Times of India Group Chief Graphics Consultant, curates a selection of his mentor, Laxman’s work on domestic and global politics, economics, personalities and more. Section by section, he explains what makes the Common Man so uncommon and rare an achievement, and why Laxman’s voice is unique in the world of cartooning. As a cartoonist and an admirer for more than fifty years from 1966 till date, Ninan looks back with wonder and admiration at the genius of RK Laxman. And invites you to do the same.

RK Laxman left for his heavenly abode on 26 January, 2015, at Pune.

The Amazing Olympics- Down the Centuries

The Amazing Olympics Down the Centuries
(Times Group Books, 2016)

The Olympic Games are considered to be the world's foremost sports competition that originated in ancient Greece around 3,000 years ago. These games were held every four years since 776 BC in Olympia in honor of God Zeus. Inspired by the ancient Greek tradition, Frenchman Pierre de Coubertin decided to pursue his project to revive these Games and devoted his life to build a peaceful and better world by educating young people through sports. With his initiatives the first Olympic Games of the modern era held in 1896 in Athens, featuring 241 participants from the 14 nations. In fact, the year 2016 is the 120th anniversary of the modern Olympic Games.

This book traces the history and myths associated with the ancient Games to the modern day events and captures some amazing, weird and wildly hilarious facts in an interesting visual format. Topped with colorful cartoons and caricatures of greatest ever Olympics sporting icons, it is an attempt to bring back many forgotten heroes from the past.

I am grateful to International Olympic Committee (IOC), Lausanne, Switzerland and International Paralympic Committee (IPC), Cologne, Germany for supporting my project by sharing some of the rare photographs, emblems and official mascot pictures from their archive to use in this book. My travel to these historic places gave me the opportunity to explore many  lesser known facts which were added to this massive collection of trivia 'The Amazing Olympics- Down the Centuries'.
